ERDC/TN SAV-08-1, Restoring Eelgrass (Zostera marina) from Seed: A Comparison of Planting Methods for Large-Scale Projects
نویسندگان
چکیده
PROBLEM: Eelgrass (Zostera marina) seeds are being used in a variety of both smalland large-scale restoration activities and have been successfully used to initiate recovery of eelgrass in the Virginia seaside coastal lagoons, which lost eelgrass in the 1930s ‘wasting disease’ pandemic (Orth et al. 2006a). However, a major bottleneck with the use of seeds has been the relatively low rate of seedling establishment, generally 10 percent or less of seeds placed in the field (Orth et al. 2003). A recently developed underwater seed planter (Traber et al. 2003) represents an alternative method that could improve seedling success compared to techniques used in previous Chesapeake Bay studies and elsewhere.

PROBLEM: The use of eelgrass (Zostera marina) seeds is increasingly being recognized as a viable option for both smalland large-scale restoration projects. Although methods for handcollecting, processing and storing eelgrass seeds have advanced to match the scale of collections, the number of seeds collected has limited the scale of restoration efforts, as well as the scale of ecologically rele...
متن کاملERDC/EL TR-08-20, Large-Scale Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Restoration in Chesapeake Bay
In 2003, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Chesapeake Bay Office began a comprehensive research effort to restore submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the Chesapeake Bay region. The effort employed an agricultural approach to restore under-water grasses by using seeds to produce new plants and mechanical equipm...
متن کاملAn effective transplanting technique using shells for restoration of Zostera marina habitats.
Significant declines in seagrass coverage have occurred in many parts of the world. In recent decades, transplanting projects for seagrass restoration at die-off areas have been attempted, but most current seagrass transplanting techniques are cost and labor intensive. We have developed a new seagrass transplanting method in which oyster shells are used as an anchoring device, and does not requ...
متن کاملSeed production from the mixed mating system of Chesapeake Bay (USA) eelgrass (Zostera marina; Zosteraceae).
In monoecious plants, gametes can be exchanged in three ways: among unrelated genets (outbreeding), with close relatives (inbreeding), or within individuals (geitonogamous selfing). These different mating systems may have consequences for population demography and fitness. The experiment presented herein used artificial crosses to examine the mating system of Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA eelgr...
